Bonne
Ecole Elementary is located in Slidell, Louisiana, one of
twenty-one elementary schools in St. Tammany Parish. It
has been fully accredited by the Commission on Elementary
Schools and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
since 1981. Bonne Ecole opened its doors in the fall of
1975 as Eighth Ward Elementary School. The school was built
in the fastest growing area of the parish, and experienced
an increase from 600 to 1,100 students in the first three
years. Classes have been held in hallways, the library,
gym, and in as many as twenty portables at one time. Since
the original building was designed for 500 students, the
school plant has seen many changes to accommodate growth,
as well as added programs over the past 25 years. In 1977,
ten classrooms and a gym were added. In 1991, kindergarten
and fifth grade wings were completed. A new addition for
special Education and Music was completed in December 2002.
A new addition to accomodate 6th grade was completed in
the summer of 2007.
During
the early years, a playground was not available for the
students. Children played on the sidewalks around the school
until the always active and supportive PTA, along with community
leaders, raised the funds and provided the manpower to clear
land and construct the beginnings of a playground. The PTA
has continued to upgrade the playground through the purchase
of equipment and the construction of safety containment
areas. In 1992, in cooperation with the City of Slidell,
the PTA, and the St. Tammany Parish School Board, a walking
trail was constructed on the campus to further promote fitness.
In 1995, a plan was designed for a series of fitness stations
to be built along the trail. With funds provided by the
PTA, six stations have been installed. In 2002, the PTA
purchased two additional large pieces of play equipment
for the students.
